Introduction
There are many different ways to approaching education. With these ways come different types of styles and techniques. With these different styles and techniques come the famous philosophers who are known for there great achievement and theories. Below are ten people who have had a substantial impact on education in the United States. Due to there help U.S education is what it is today.
Plato
Plato was a famous educational philosopher that had a major impact on American Education. He lived between the years of 424/423 BC-348/347 BC. Plato believed in removing children from their mother at a young age. By doing this you can raise the children as wards of the state. Along with this philosophy of thinking Plato also advocated for 2 years of military training to be included in peoples education. |
Aristotle
While Aristotle is very well known and famous for his philosophy in United States education there are only traces of his ideas left to see today. One major thing that Aristotle believed in was repetition. He believed that with a lot of repetition people could create good habits. This idea still rests in education today. Aristotle's ideas and theories helped morph education and influenced it to grow during his time. |
Allan Bloom
Allan was a from believer in educational progressivism. This is the belief that humans are very social people and learn best when they are placed in real life situations. This theory is still very prominent today in all types of learning throughout the educational system in the United States. John Dewey
John lived a life lasting from 1859-1952. Dewey was also apart of educational progressivism. He also believed that education is a necessity. This is a belief that carries on today throughout the United States and its educational system. Through education the life of the group goes on. Paulo Freire
Paulo was lived from 1921-1997. During his time as an educational philosopher he showed how he believed in educating the peasants in the world. By doing this we can work to liberate them from what he though of as oppression. This idea brought change to how some thought of education establishing his importance as a philosopher and theorist. One of his famous sayings is that students are empty bank accounts waiting to be filled.This is the reason why the United States has adopted things like "no child left behind" today. |
Martin Heidegger
Martin lived a time period spanning from 1889-1976. He was a firm believer in higher education and what it had to offer people. He thought that students should attend universities where they are tested to new limits. Today many kids in America still attend college because this belief lives on. Teaching and research should be key components to ones education as they seek to grow and learn. Without higher education one will not be as successful. |
Charlotte Mason
Charlotte lived between the years of 1842-1923. She was a educator. During her life her main goal was to improve early childhood education. She found it important that kids begin a high quality of learning at a young age. This will later help them when they receive more difficult schooling in the future. John Holt
John was a famous educational philosopher. He published his first book in 1964. The main focus of his book was why students fail in school. He believed that students did not fail due to the effort of the schools but actually because of the schools leading to his main focus of unschooling. John Locke
John lived from 1632-1704. During his lifetime he was an established philosopher in education thinking of many new theories. The main thing he believed is that education maketh the man. He believed that people are empty cabinets. He also stated that he thought men were good or evil and useful or not based off of their education.
